Dad Formally Charged in Teen Daughter’s Week-long Disappearance

Los Angeles County’s district attorney announced charges against a man who reported his 15-year-old daughter missing only to have her turn up a week later outside a television station.

Jeffery Chao was arrested last week by Monterey Park Police and charged with conspiracy, child abduction, and falsifying a police report in the “disappearance of Alison Chao, as CrimeOnline reported.

Alison supposedly vanished while riding her bicycle to an aunt’s house on July 16. On July 23, however, she was found outside KABC in Glendale.

In his announcement released on Tuesday, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said that Chao was only charged with stealing/concealing his daughter and falsely filing an emergency report.

“Falsely reporting a child as missing not only violates the law but also diverts critical law enforcement resources away from other serious matters,” Gascón said. “This type of behavior will not be tolerated, and we will hold the responsible individual accountable for his actions.”

Chao was set to be arraigned on Tuesday.

If convicted, Chao faces a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.
