South Carolina Sheriff’s Deputy Fired, Charged in Domestic Violence Incident

A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy who was fired last week in the midst of a domestic violence investigation was charged in the incident on Wednesday by state authorities.

Former Florence County deputy Treyvon Sellers, 29, faces third degree domestic violence and breach of peace charges in the July 25 incident in neighboring Darlington County, WMBF reported.

Sellers was on leave at the time after his involvement in a fatal officer-involved shooting in May, which is under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

A report on the July incident says that Sellers approached the victim “in an aggressive manner” and disregarded the orders of on duty deputies at the scene.

Sellers tried to harm the victim with “reasonably creating fear of imminent peril,” the report said, according to WPDE. He further climbed into a vehicle the victim was operating and tried to hit them.

After the attack, he shouted obscenities out in public, “in full view of other residences.”

Deputies said there was an audio/video recording of the incident.”

Court documents viewed by WPDE said the victim was Sellers’ wife.

Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said he fired Sellers on Friday because of the incident, saying his conduct was “unbecoming” of a Florence County deputy.

Sellers had been with the Florence County department since October 2022 after staring his career at the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office in 2017.

In the May incident, a Florence County deputy tried to stop a vehicle driven by 43-year-old William Rankin, who didn’t stop and eventually crashed in front of his home and ran into the house. The deputy and a K-9 followed him inside, where they encountered Rankin and another person who was not involved in the car chase.

The police dog bit the other person, and the deputy shot Rankin, who died at a hospital. The uninvolved person was taken to a hospital for treatment for the dog bite.

Joye asked SLED to take over the investigation after putting the deputy involved, presumably Sellers although he has not been named in reports about the incident, on administrative leave. That investigation has not been completed.

SLED said Wednesday that Sellers was booked into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center on the domestic violence and breach of peace charges.
