‘Tragic Accident’: Missing Autistic Girl Dies After Found in Retention Pond Near Home

A 7-year-old Florida girl who vanished on Tuesday has died after she was discovered in a pond, police said.

A resident told WJAX that they witnessed police pulling Adalyn Laymon from a retention pond near her St. Johns County home. A spokesperson said a deputy and firefighter had spotted her underwater near shore.

Laymon — who was nonverbal and autistic — was discovered in the pond roughly an hour after St. Johns County police issued a missing person alert for her.

WTLV reported that Laymon was transported to the hospital in critical condition before she was pronounced dead.

Foul play is not suspected in Laymon’s death.

“This was a tragic accident,” police said.
