Small Town Mayor in Louisiana Charged With Child Rape

A small town Louisiana mayor was charged Thursday with rape of a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a child after she abruptly resigned the post.

Misty Roberts Clanton, 42, announced last Friday that she was taking two-week leave of absence, appointing DeRidder Fire Chief Ken Harlowas mayor pro tem to take her place, KPLC reported.

The following day, Clanton sent the city council her letter of resignation “effective today,” and state police said it had opened an investigation.

DeRidder’s city council had scheduled a special meeting on Tuesday with a single agenda item: to consider an investigation into allegations of misconduct against the mayor. After her resignation, however, the council elected to let state police handle the investigation.

Louisiana State Police filed third degree rape and contributing to delinquency charges against Clanton on Wednesday. She was arrested Thursday morning and released on a $75,000 bond just over an hour later.

Her attorney, Adam Johnson, released a statement complaining that Clanton had not been interviewed by investigators.

“My client maintains her innocence and, as it stands, she is in fact innocent. She has not been charged with a crime and/or convicted of any crime,” he said in a statement even though she was, in fact, charged with two crimes.

Louisiana State Police said its special victims unit conducted interviews with two juveniles, and both told investigaors that Clanton had sex with one of them while she was mayor.

Clanton was serving her second term as DeRidder’s mayor.
