Michigan Toddler Shoots Himself in Stomach with Loaded, Unsecured Handgun He Found at Babysitter’s Home

A 2-year-old Michigan boy is recovering after he found a babysitters loaded, unsecured handgun and shot himself in the stomach.

Warren Police said they were called to the home shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday and found the toddler suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and said to be “responsive and alert.”

Investigators determined that the child was at the home of his 42-year-old babysitter, who had a license to carry concealed weapons and had two handguns in the home.

“While babysitting, it is believed that the babysitter left the handguns unsecured in an area accessible to the child,” the police department said.

“Investigators will be examining the details surrounding the safe and secure storage of the handgun as part of their investigation,” the department said. “As of this point in the investigation, it does not appear that more serious foul play was involved.”

According to WDIV, state law requires gun owners with a minor in the home to store their firearms in locked storage containers.
