A North Carolina woman died at an Illinois airport on Thursday after she became trapped in a baggage conveyor belt, officials said.
Chicago police reportedly responded to O’Hare International Airport’s baggage area after Virginia Vinton, 57, got pinned in machinery at Terminal 5. Surveillance footage showed Vinton, who did not work at the airport, accessing an unoccupied and restricted area of the Terminal at 2 a.m., according to WMAQ.
Vinton was pronounced dead at the scene hours later. Authorities said the area Vinton accessed — where luggage is inspected and transported to and from airplanes — was not considered a high-security location, according to WLS.
Vinton’s death remains under investigation. Meanwhile, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration told WMAQ that it is not involved in the ongoing investigation because she was not employed by the airport or an airline.
