Cause of Death Revealed for Woman Found Dead in O’Hare Airport Baggage Handling Area

The Cook County Medical Examiner said Friday that a woman found dead entangled in baggage handling machinery at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport died by suicide.

Virginia Vinton, 57, was found dead before 8 a.m. Thursday in the baggage area of Terminal 5, as CrimeOnline previously reported. Surveillance video showed Vinton, from Waxhaw, North Carolina, entering an unoccupied, restricted area at about 2:30 a.m.

She was found about five hours later, entangled in a conveyor that moves baggage.

The medical examiner said Friday afternoon that the manner of death was hanging and asphyxiation, WLS reported.

The area Vinton accessed is secure, but not high security, investigators said. The conveyor belts there move luggage to and from planes in the international terminal, where they also go through customs inspection.

Vinton was at the airport overnight, police said, but they have not determined why she snuck into the employees-only area.

Police are still investigating.
