A 3-year-old Michigan boy found dead in a hot car Tuesday afternoon likely dead from heat, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office
News Channel 3 reports that police responded to the scene at a Vicksburg Family Fare store, following a call at around 3 p.m. regarding an unresponsive boy inside a maroon Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle reportedly belonged to the child’s father.
According to Kalamazoo County Undersheriff James VanDyken, the child had been left alone in the car while his father went inside the store for groceries.
It’s unclear at this time whether prosecutors will charge the father remains uncertain at this time.
This incident marks the 20th hot car death in 2024 in the United States, according to Jan Null, CCM Department of Meteorology & Climate Science at San Jose State University.
“On this date last year, there had also been 20 Pediatric Vehicular Heatstroke (PVH) deaths,” Null told CrimeOnline in an emailed statement.
Police have not yet released the child’s identity and it’s unclear whether the father will be charged. Check back for updates.
