Police in Texas are looking for a 48-year-old man they say broke into his estranged wife’s home, shot dead her boyfriend, and then forced her to help him dispose of the body.
Michael Maurice Mack, 48, is wanted on a charge of capital murder in the death of 53-year-old Kelvin Hinton, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sheriff’s office said they found evidence of the murder at a home in Katy, but the body was found 120 miles away in Vidor.
Court documents said that Mack and his wife were married in 2019 but have been separated for a year and a half, according to Law&Crime. In that time, Mack began stalking her.
According to the documents, the wife told investigators she awoke at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to Mack beating her with a rifle. Hinton also woke up and demanded that he stop, but Mack allegedly shot him and kept beating the woman.
The wife begged him not to shoot her, the documents say, while Mack told her he’d been watching the two of them all day. Then, he reportedly pointed the rifle at her head and handed her a handgun, ordering her to shoot Hinton’s body.
“Grab it, b****,” he allegedly said. “You better shoot him or I’m going to shoot your ass right now.”
“[She] said she was in fear for her life, closed her eyes as the Defendant grabbed her hand placing it on the handgun with her finger on the trigger, as he placed his hand over her hand and forced her to shoot [Hinton],” documents said. “[She] said once he pulled the trigger she did not know if [Hinton] was shot a second time. [She] said the Defendant told her she was going to help him dispose of [Hinton’s] body because he could not get rid of two bodies.”
Mack wrapped Hinton’s body in sheets and put it in the trunk of the wife’s car. They drove to Vidor, where they dumped the body.
The wife said that Mack eventually let her go.
“Get your ass out of the car,” he reportedly told her. “I’m not going to kill you today.”
Authorities said they found the wife “reliable and credible.”
“During the investigation I spoke with several people who said they spoke with the Defendant at different times after the incident and the Defendant admitted to his participation in the Murder and Tampering with a Corpse,” an affidavit stated.
According to KTRK, Hinton’s family said they were aware Mack had been stalking his estranged wife but were unaware of the seriousness of the situation until Hinton was killed.
“He didn’t let me know the guy had called his phone and threatened him not to come back to the house,” Michael Lewis, Hinton’s brother, said.
Court records also show that Mack was previously arrested for harassing his wife, KTRK said. He posted bail but broke bond conditions that ordered him not to contact his wife.
Anyone with information about Mack’s whereabouts is urged to contact their local law enforcement agency, police at 713-274-9100, or Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
