A dismembered body found burning in a shopping cart this month was a tenant of an apartment where his severed body parts were later discovered, New York police said Sunday.
Gothamist reported that Lutalo Henderson, 46, had been missing since August 5 — the same day his hands and leg were found in a Bronx apartment. Henderson lived in a fourth-floor unit at the same building, records indicated.

The severed body parts were located shortly after firefighters responded to reports of an object on fire under a bridge in Yonkers. There, they discovered a dismembered torso that had been lit ablaze in a shopping cart.
Henderson is believed to have been killed in the Bronx apartment where his hands were found in a bleach-filled crockpot and a leg in a bag in the freezer, according to the New York Daily News.
The news outlet reported that Henderson’s teeth — which were presumably removed to prevent identification — were also found.
Previous reports indicated surveillance cameras filmed two men pushing the shopping cart containing Henderson’s body. Police allegedly also reviewed footage showing a man pushing a shopping cart onto a Metro-North train in the Bronx which resembled the one later found burning under the bridge.
Additionally, police reportedly recovered a firearm and drug paraphernalia from the home where Henderson’s severed body parts were reportedly found.
While authorities have not disclosed what led them to that apartment unit, the building super told the New York Daily News that Henderson often rented out a second bedroom in his home.
Weeks before the body was identified as Henderson, his sister told Gothamist that he moved out of the Bronx apartment in July.
No arrests have been made despite Sunday’s development. Additionally, officials have not publicly named any persons of interest in Henderson’s slaying.
Speaking with Gothamist, the NYPD said the medical examiner is still working to determine how Henderson died.
