Authorities in Houston are investigation a newborn infant found in a ditch Tuesday afternoon, the second dead newborn found in the city in a week.
Harris County Sheriff’s Major John Nanny said the baby found on Tuesday was discovered by law care crews lying on a blanket outside a concrete plant in north Houston, Houston Public Media said.
Nanny did not provide details about the discovery but reminded listeners of “the Infant Safe Haven Law that allows the mother or the parent to drop a child off at an EMS, fire department, a hospital or anything like that confidentially to take care of the child.”
The state law allows parents of infants 60 days or younger to surrender the child.
Last week, crews found a newborn in the back of garbage truck in northwest Harris County. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that mother told investigators she gave birth and passed out from severe abdominal pain. When she woke up, she said, the infant was unresponsive.
Last month, an 18-year-old woman was charged with abandoning her newborn in a plastic bag and leaving it near a dumpster, KHOU reported. A passerby heard the baby crying and called 911. The baby was doing fine at last report.
