Police in Florida have arrested an Amazon delivery driver for a hit-and-run this week that sent a 30-year-old Miami mother and her infant son to the hospital.
The incident took place Thursday morning when the woman was pushing her child in a stroller while walking her dog. A vehicle struck the mother and child, knocking the woman off her feet and the child out of his stroller, Miami-Dade Police said.
The suspect was seen getting out of her vehicle, setting the stroller upright, and putting the baby back into it before fleeing the scene. The victims were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment of their injuries, while police launched an investigation, ultimately identifying the driver as Sarahy Naybeth Parra-Ovalles, 45.
Parra-Ovalles was arrested late Friday afternoon and charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury, according to WFOR.
The incident happened inside Aventura Isles Estates, a gated community, at about 8;30 a.m. Parra-Ovalles identified herself as an Amazon driver to the security guard, who photographed her driver’s license and car tags before letting her in.
Video showed the woman with the stroller entering an intersections while Parra-Ovalles turns into the intersection from opposite lanes and hits the woman and stroller, according to arrest documents. The woman was thrown backwards, while the stroller was knocked over and the baby falling onto the ground.
The woman suffered a skull fracture, bruising, and a brain bleed, WTVJ reported. The baby had a cut on his forehead.
Police said Parra-Ovalles initially told them she was making deliveries and saw the victims on the street. She said the mother seemed “out of it” and “placed her hands on her hood.” When she asked if she was OK, the mother nodded that she was, and Parra-Ovalles said she drover away.
Police then showed her video of the crash. At that point, she denied hitting the mother and child and invoked her Miranda rights.
A neighbor told WFOR that the woman and her son are recovering. No one said if the dog was injured.
An Amazon spokesperson told the station on Saturday that Parra-Ovalles is “no longer delivering” for the company.
“This is a terrible incident and our thoughts are with this family,” the spokesperson said. “We’re looking into the matter and will support law enforcement as they investigate.”
