Police in South Carolins have arrested a man in connection with the death of a woman who had been missing since May 2022.
On Thursday morning, police in Orangeburg detained Sheridan Fogle, 54, charging him with the murder of 51-year-old Penni Whiteside. She was last seen on May 11, 2022, while living with Fogle in Myrtle Beach.
During the investigation, witness statements led police to believe the victim was buried in the backyard under a firepit.
On June 12, investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence, where they discovered the victim’s remains inside the pit, Shore News reports.
Neighbors told WMBF News they were shocked to learn about Fogle’s death and were unaware of the situation,
“I think it’s absolutely bizarre,” neighbor Nikolai Zaitsev said. “I mean, you have kids playing at the park here every day, And birthday parties, weddings, et cetera that happen here. And I’m sure nobody around here had a clue about what was actually going on.”
Fogle’s cause of death is currently unknown, pending an autopsy report by the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
“This is a tragic loss of life and a senseless crime of violence,” Myrtle Beach police said on Facebook. “Thank you to the U.S. Marshals Service- Carolina’s Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety for assisting with the arrest in this case.”
Fogle remains behind bars without bail. Check back for updates.
