SC Man Arrested After Woman Missing Since 2022 Found Buried in Her Former Backyard

A South Carolina man was arrested this week and charged with the death of a woman last seen in 2022 after her remains were found outside her home in June.

Sheridan Dirk Fogle, 54, has been charged with murder of Penni Whiteside and ordered held without bond on Friday, WPDE reported.

Whiteside and Fogle had been living together in Myrtle Beach when she was reported missing on May 11, 2022, according to the Myrtle Beach Police Department. Whiteside’s brother reported her missing, saying he hadn’t seen or spoken with her since January of that year, nor had any other friends or family members.

It’s not clear why no one searched the yard of the building where they lived until June 12, when investigators executed a search warrant and found Whiteside’s remains under a fire pit in the backyard.

The arrest warrant said the statements made by neighbors indicated there was “reason to believe” Whiteside, who was 51 when she disappeared, was buried in the yard.

Fogle was arrested in Orangeburg and brought back to Horry County, where a judge in Myrtle Beach set future court dates for October 25 and December 13, according to WPDE.
