A $15,000 reward is being offered for information in the deadly shooting of a 90-year-old Navy veteran during a carjacking in southwest Houston over the weekend.
Police said Nelson Beckett was shot and killed on Saturday outside an assisted living facility on Westbrae Parkway, near South Gessner and West Bellfort. The unidentified killer stole Beckett’s vehicle, beat him and struck him with the car while fleeing.
Officers later recovered Beckett’s vehicle less than three miles from the crime scene, according to KHOU.
“Cases like this have a tendency to galvanize the entire city, the entire county, the entire state,” Andy Kahan with Houston Crime Stoppers said. “At the age of 90, he was contributing to the community and trying to help people in the best way you possibly can and have your life end in this fashion not on our watch.”
The murder, which happened in broad daylight, has raised concerns about safety among some residents.
“I did hear about that. I had no idea it was right next door to us. No way. I literally just read about that last night,” a neighbor named Kaitlyn told ABC 13,
Kahan added that a reward is crucial when information about a suspect is scarce.
“Hopefully now they’ll have the courage and the fortitude to step up to the plate now knowing that there’s a reward up to $15,000,”
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS or the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS. Online tips can be sent through the Texas Department of Public Safety.
