4-Year-Old Georgia Girl Finds Brother’s Loaded, Unsecured Gun and Kills Herself With It

A 4-year-old Georgia girl is dead after she found her brother’s loaded, unsecured handgun and shot herself in the head.

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that a 911 call came in early Friday morning about a child who had fallen and needed medical attention. When medics and deputies arrived on the scene, however, they found the girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

The sheriff’s office said the girl “was beyond help” and was pronounced dead on the scene. In the course of investigating the incident, deputies learned that the girl’s 20-year-old brother had left his loaded gun unattended “and that the child must have retrieved it” and shot herself.

The brother, Joseph Edwin Hinson, was arrested and charged with cruelty to children and second degree murder. He’s being held without bond at the Paulding County Jail.
