A California toddler has died after being left in a hot car, marking the 30th such death nationwide this year.
An Anaheim, California, mother and her 3-year-old toddler were found unresponsive in a vehicle on Friday afternoon, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Both were taken to a nearby hospital, where the toddler was pronounced dead. Police believe the death was due to heat-related complications. The mother is still recovering.
“My heart is so heavy knowing that our little girl, just 3 years old, died from the heat,” the great-aunt said.
Police are still investigating the toddler’s official cause of death and the circumstances.
Jan Null, an adjunct professor of meteorology in the CCM Department of Meteorology & Climate Science at San Jose State University, noted that temperatures in Anaheim reached 112 degrees that day. This is the third pediatric vehicular heatstroke (PVH) death in California this year and the 30th nationwide.
