Boston police responded to a call about shots fired in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood late Monday night and found a mother and her baby with gunshot wounds.

Both were taken to local hospitals, and the baby is being treated for life-threatening injuries, WCVB reported.

“Pretty heinous act in general, pretty cowardly. I can’t think of any reason why someone would shoot a female and young child for any reason,” Boston Police Department Commissioner Michael Cox said.

Police said the incident took place in the driveway of a housing complex in the south Boston neighborhood.

Police have not released any information about a suspect or the names of the victims.
