An Ohio man was convicted Friday of stabbing his girlfriend to death but only after he was thrown out of the courtroom when he tried to present his own statement before the jury went into deliberations.
Toby Madden, 52, was found guilty on one county of murder, one count of felony murder, and two counts of felonious assault in the death of Rachelle Brewsaugh, 50, in October 2022.
Prosecutors rebutted the defense’s closing argument Friday morning, with the prosecutor noting that Madden stabbed her 55 times. After he finished, Madden jumped up to begin his own rebuttal of the state’s case, while the judge rushed the jurors out of the courtroom.
Madden presented an extended discussion, Law&Crime reported, at times seeming to address his own lawyer, who turned away and sighed as his client spoke.
Madden was ultimately escorted out of the courtroom and did not return after the jury returned an hour later with their verdict, WXIX reported.
Madden was sentenced to 15 years in prison plus an additional 10 years for being a repeat offender. Those 25 years will be served after he completes an 11-year sentence he’s already serving for an unrelated drug charge.
