A Cleveland news reporter was shot and wounded in what her station called a “brutal domestic violence attack” Monday morning.
The incident took place just berore 8 a.m. in Lakewood when a 911 call reported two people arguing on the street, WOIO reported. As the officers headed toward the call, the callers reported hearing gunshots.
Police arrived to find a man and a woman suffering from gunshots on the sidewalk. The man, identified as 34-year-old Bryant Carter, was dead, and the woman, identified as WOIO reporter Winnie Dortch, was rushed to the hospital.
“This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack. She was immediately rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries,” said WOIO News Director Brian Sinclair. “Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community. “
Her family told the station the surgery went well.
Police recovered a gun on the scene. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the shooting and what exactly happened. According to WKYC, Lakewood Police Captain Gary Stone said investigators believe Carter and killed himself after shooting Dortch.
Police said Dortch’s wounds were “serious.”
