Woman Wanted for Shooting Ex-Boyfriend in Texas Caught After Chase and Standoff in Alabama

A woman accused of chasing her ex-boyfriend down and shooting him in front of a Texas police station early Friday morning was taken into custody nearly 12 hours later after a standoff on Interstate 65 in Alabama.

The Bellaire Police Department in Texas said the incident began at about 2:30 a.m. when a report came in that a woman in a Mercedes SUV was following a group of people in a Ford pickup truck. The occupants in the truck told police that the woman was the ex-girlfriend of a passenger and that they believed she was armed.

Hoping to avoid a confrontation with her, the truck pulled up in front of the Bellaire Police Department. Two officers in marked patrol cars arrived and saw the woman in the SUV circle around to the passenger side of the truck and fire several shots at the passenger in the front seat. One of the officers fired at the SUV as it again circled the truck before speeding away.

The officers tended to the victim, who was hit several times, and transported him to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. No one else was injured.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, state Highway Patrol officers spotted the 2022 Mercedes Benz GLB on Interstate 65, near the 170 mile marker, just after noon. Although the agency didn’t say why, troopers attempted the stop the vehicle and initiated a pursuit when the driver refused to stop.

District Attorney CJ Robinson Shots told AL.com that spike strips were used to stop the suspect’s car in the northbound lane near mile marker 192 in Autauga County, northwest of Montgomery, where a standoff ensued. Traffic was stopped in both directions on the highway until the driver was ultimately arrested.

Neither ALEA nor AL.com said how the standoff ended, but all but one northbound lane of I-65 were opened by 2:45 p.m.

ALEA identified the driver as Choima Agurd, 39, and said she was charged with felony attemping to elude. Bellaire Police issued warrants for her arrest on charges of aggravated assault of a family member with a gun and aggravated assault against a police officer.

Agurd is being held in the Montgomery County jail.
