An unknown driver dropped off a gunshot victim at a Philadelphia hospital early Saturday morning and then three nurses with his vehicle as he fled the scene.
The driver, in a silver Jeep, pulled into the ambulance bay at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center at about 4:30 a.m. with a 28-year-old man inside who had multiple gunshot wounds, WPVI reported. As the three nurses rushed to treat the gunshot victim, the driver hit them with his Jeep in his rush to get away.
He also apparently struck the gunshot victim as well.
Penn Medicine said a 36-year-old male nurse was in critical condition after the incident, suffering from facial injuries and internal bleeding. The other two, a 37-year-old man and a 51-year-old man, were said to be in stable condition, KYW said.
Police said the gunshot victim is a 28-year-old man who may have suffered a head injury as the driver fled, WPVI said. He is believed to be in critical condition.
All four people are being treated at Penn Presbyterian. A spokesperson for the hospital said the facility is providing support for the victims and their families.
“In a workplace where teams are devoted to caring for others, this incident is devastating to our staff, and is a reminder of the tragic, far-reaching toll of gun violence on entire communities,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Violence against health care workers harms us all, and is a corrosive, unacceptable threat which our staff must cope with on a daily basis. Our heroic staff continued working to save the gunshot victim and care for all our other patients even as their own colleagues were suffering and being treated.”
The identities of the victims have not been released. Police said they were looking for information on the driver and vehicle that dropped off the gunshot victim. He is believed to be in his early 20s. Police said they believe the shooting happened about a 10 minute drive from the hospital on Belmont Avenue.
