Texas police in the Galveston Bay city of Seabrook are looking for a 22-year-old man they say killed a woman in her apartment earlier this month.
Police were called to the apartment complex on Clear Lake at about 11:30 a.m. on October 4 for a report about a man wielding gun who may have been pointing it at children, KTRK reported. When they arrived, two small children peered out a window and eventually opened the door for the officers.
Officers found the body of Mary Jayne Collins, 23, on the floor inside snd launched a search that included a SWAT team for a suspect, identified as Dawayland Earnest Hurst, 22.
Investigators initially believed that Collins had been shot, but the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that she died from blunt force trauma and a single stab wound to the upper body, Seabrook Police said.
On Friday, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office filed a murder charge against Hurst. They also said they believe Hurst assaulted one of the children minutes before the arrival of officers.
The children have been placed with family members, and police are searching for Hurst, KHOU said.
