Suspect Caught in Murder of Off-Duty Corrections Officer Who Intervened in Assault Against Woman

A ma accused of fatally shooting an off-duty Florida corrections officer last week was caught in North Carolina.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Officer Brad McNew was shot dead Saturday when he intervened in suspect Demaurea Grant’s assault of a woman, Queen City News reported.

Deputies said the incident began just before 1:30 a.m. when a black Mustang with North Carolina plates pulled into a Jacksonville gas station. A man in the passenger seat, later identified as Grant, got out of the car, put a handgun on the hood, and walked over to the driver’s side. He dragged the woman out of the car, hit her, and threw her against the vehicle and onto the ground.

McNew, who had just finished his work shift, went to check on the woman. Grant old him it was a “family matter” and went back to the woman before pointing his gun at McNew. The man and the woman got back into the Mustang, and as it drove away, he began firing, striking the officer.

McNew was rushed to a hospital but died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office charged Grant, 29, with second degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated assault with a firearm, and discharging a firearm in public.

He was located in Gastonia, North Carolina about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and was taken into custody. The woman involved in the incident was taken into custody on an unrelated North Carolina warrant. Detectives are interviewing her.

Grant has a criminal history in North Carolina dating back to 2013.
