A 53-year-old New York state middle school paraprofessional has been arrested and charged with the murder of her 61-year-old sister.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said deputie were called for a welfare check on Penny Busch on October 11 and did not find her at her home in the Village of Honeoye Falls.
Thinking the disappearance was “suspicious,” investigators launched an extensive search of her 8-acre property over the weekend and continued their search elsewhere over the next few days.
The investigation led them to an area of the Genesee River in the nearby town of Rush, where they found the body of a woman. That body was positively identified as Penny Busch on Friday.
“Investigators established significant evidence and probable cause to arrest her sister, Jamie Busch, for the murder of Penny Busch,” the sheriff’s office said.
The Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District said in a statement that Jamie Busch had been placed on leave from her job in the district as a middle school paraprofessional, WHAM reported.
“Although we have never encountered a situation like this in our district, we are confident that, as a community, we will come together, support one another, and get through this difficult time,” Superintendent Gene Mancuso said. “Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority, and we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone.”
According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Penny Busch was last seen at her home on October 6.
Investigators did not reveal a possible motive in the murder. Jamie Busch was arraigned on one count of second degree murder and two counts of tampering with physical evidence. The was arraigned on Friday and ordered held without bail, the sheriff’s office said.
