Florida Woman Uses Child to Walk Out of Target With $1,111 in Merchandise

A Florida woman was arrested Thursday after she apparently used a young child to help her steal multiple items from a Cape Coral Target store.

Target reported the incident o the Cape Coral Police Department on October 12. The store said the unknown woman had come into the store the day before with a child under the age of 10.

Surveillance video showed the woman loading up a cart with multiple items, including a barista machine and a vacuum cleaner, then handed the cart over to the child. In the video, she was seen pointing to the exit doors, apparently directing the child to push the cart out without paying, then followed a few minutes later.

Detectives sent the woman’s picture around to other officers and detectives, and on Thursday, an officer called about a woman panhandling recognized the woman as the suspect from the Target theft.

She was arrested and identified as Elizabeth Novac, 23. She’s been charged with grand theft — the value of the items stolen was put at $1,111 — and contributing to the deliquency of a minor.

Police did not say anything about the status of the child, nor did they describe Novac’s relationship with the child.
