An Army sergeant was arraigned in Texas on Monday on 27 criminal charges, including attempted murder and rape.
Greville Clarke, 31, a sergeant stationed at Fort Cavazos, is accused of breaking into the barracks rooms of five different women and robbing them. He is charged with holding two at gunpoint and strangling one with a lamp cord until he thought she was dead, Military.com reported.
The charges include attempted premeditated murder, rape, intent to rape, kidnapping, and burglary. The incidents all took place in 2022.
Clarke pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.
He was most recently assigned to the 74th Multi-Role Bridge Company, 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade.
Court records say that in the most recent incident, Clarke broke into a woman’s room, bound her hands and blindfolded her before raping her at gunpoint. He is accused of taking pictures of her naked, hit her with the gun, took her credit card, and stole $14,000 from her bank account.
He is also accused of shoving her into a footlocker to take her somewhere else, but she broke free, and he shot at her when she ran.
That incident took place on October 2, 2022, and he was taken into custody the following day. He’s been held since that time.
The court documents say he carried out a similar attack in July 2022, strangling that woman with a lamp cord. Believing he had killed her, the documents say, he washed and disposed of the linens on the woman’s bed during the assault.
The documents further say he conducted two such attacks in March of that year.
Military Judge Col. Maureen Kohn presided over the arraignment at Fort Cavazos and set his next hearing for December 10, Stars and Stripes reported. An additional hearing is set for February 11, with the court martial trial to run from April 1 to May 9, 2025, according to the Killeen Daily Herald.
