California police looking for a missing person instead found the mummified body of a different person on the toilet of the home where they looked.
Union City police said they were asked by a family member to check on Nadine Parker, 95, in August. Parker, they learned, had been moved to a senior home in Oakland years earlier.
But inside, they found two people — one dead and mummified on the toilet and the other alive but in horrible condition with mold growing out of an ear.
Sgt. Brandon Hayward told KPIX that Parker had previously lived at the house with her two sons. The still-living man is her son, and investigators believe the dead man was her other son. Police do not believe any foul play was involved, he said.
The coroner’s office is still working to positively identify the body and a cause of death. Hayward said the man is believed to have been dead for weeks if not months.
The house was in very bad condition with trash scattered everywhere.
“The backyard and the front yard was filled with trash,” said neighbor Bruce Chan. “It was piled up to 10 feet high or so with trash. We always wondered about it because the place always seemed really creepy.”
Hayward said investigators believe the son suffers from some type of mental illness. He did not say if he was receiving any treatment.
