Soldier Charged in Murder of Army Dog Handler Sgt. Sarah Roque

The US Army has charged a 21-year-old soldier in connection with the death of a a sergeant who was found dead in a dumpster earlier this month.

The Army Officce of Special Trial Counsel referred charges of unlawfully killing a person and obstruction of justice against Specialist Wooster Rancy, a combat engineer with the 509th Clearance Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood said in a social media post.

Sgt. Sarah Roque, 23, was found dead last week in a dumpster near the living quarters for single soldiers at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, as CrimeOnline reported. A mine dog handler who enlisted in 2020, Roque was reported missing when family members and her chain of command were unable to reach her.

The Army said it had taken a “person of interest” into custody but had not identified that person.

An obituary said Roque was born in Lubbock, Texas, and had been a bridge crew member and boat operator before re-enlisting to become a mine detection dog handler for Zorro. She is survived by her parents, three brothers, and a grandmother, who now live in Indiana.

Her body was flown Wednesday to Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport and escorted by passenger vehicles to Ligonier in Noble County for burial on Saturday, WISH reported.

Army officials said Rancy was originally from Miami, Florida and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood beginning in 2022. He is being held in pretrial confinement pending a preliminary court martial hearing.
