37th Child This Year Dies in Hot Car

A 15-month-old baby is dead after a relative forgot to drop the child off at day care and Friday and parked at a Florida middle school all day, leaving the baby inside the car.

Sumter County deputies said they were called to South Sumter Middle School just before 4:30 p.m.

Investigators said the toddler was found dead in the car later in the day.

“This is a tragic situation, and our hearts go out to the family of the child,” the sheriff’s office said.

The investigation is ongoing, deputies said, with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office involved.

No further information was released.

According to Kids and Car Safety, it was the 37th hot car death in the United States this year. Twenty-nine children died after being left in cars for extended periods last year.
