An Alaska woman was charged with murder on Monday, weeks after she allegedly killed her 5-year-old son with a kettlebell.
On October 14, Cedar Sarten, 43, called Fairbanks police and allegedly told them that someone hurt her child and he “he was definitely dead.” Officers who responded to the home found her son on the bed, not far from 20-pound kettlebell weights and two knives, according to KTUU.
Authorities said blood was found throughtout Sarten’s home, while a knife was discovered on the bed her son was on.
Sarten claimed she tried to call police the night earlier but the call did not go through. However, phone data reportedly indicated that she did not call 911 until that morning.
An autopsy indicated that Sarten’s son died of blunt force trauma. He also suffered post-mortem injuries consistent with being inflicted by a sharp object, according to KTVF.
Law&Crime reported that after she killed her son, Sarten called the boy’s father to inform him his son was dead.
“Please don’t freak out,” she allegedly said. “We don’t have a son no more.”
After making the call, Sarten reportedly tried to kill herself by slashing her neck, head, and forearms. Police not only determined her injuries were self inflicted, but they also found no sign of a break-in.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, Sarten was convicted in 2022 of reckless endangerment for an incident involving her son at the hospital. Multiple witnesses stated that they saw Sarten take the boy, who was 16 months at the time, and twist his head.
Sarten, who is charged with first-degree murder, remains jailed on $2 million bail. She remains hospitalized.
