‘Forgotten’ Florida Baby Found Dead in Middle School Parking Lot

A 15-month-old Florida baby was found unresponsive at Sumter Middle School, according to a media release from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

A family member reportedly forgot the child was in the vehicle and did not drop them off at daycare as planned. The family member then entered the middle school, leaving the child in the car, where the child was later found deceased, according to Fox 13.

The sheriff’s office, the medical examiner’s office, and the state attorney’s office are conducting a full investigation into the November 1 incident, as CrimeOnline reported at the time.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office stated, “This is a tragic situation, and our hearts go out to the family of the child.”

According to AccuWeather, temperatures reached a high of 86 degrees that day in the area.

This incident marks the 37th pediatric vehicular heatstroke (PVH) death this year, per Jan Null, CCM, Adjunct Professor of Meteorology at San Jose State University.

Reports from  Accuweather indicated the highest number of deaths reached 54 in 2018. Texas has recorded the most child deaths from vehicular heatstroke,  totaling 142 since 1998. Florida ranks second with 110 deaths, and California comes in third with 56 deaths.
