Tuskegee University Homecoming Marred by Fatal Mass Shooting

One person is dead and 12 more wounded by gunfire in a shooting at the homecoming celebration at Alabama’s Tuskegee University early Sunday morning.

Four other people suffered injuries not related to gunshots, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said.

The fatality was an 18-year-old man not connected with the university, which canceled classes on Monday to allow police to continue to process the scene. The historically Black university will make counselors available for the students at the school’s chapel during the day.

Some of the wounded were students at the school, The Associated Press reported.

The university was marking it’s 100th homecoming celebration, and events were winding down when the gunfire broke out at the West Commons on-campus apartments, Tuskegee Police Chief Patrick Mardis said.

“Some idiots started shooting,” Mardis told AL.com. “You couldn’t get the emergency vehicles in there, there were so many people there.”

The FBI was called in to assist the investigation.
