Non-Custodial Dad Shot Dead by Police After He Abducted 7-Year-Old Daughter

An Ohio man is dead after he allegedly abducted a 8-year-old girl and was later shot to death by police.

The girl was not physically injured and has been returned to her family, the Medina County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to WEWS, Charles Alexander, 43, allegedly took his daughter from a family member’s house following an altercation around 3 p.m. on Monday. Alexander did not have legal custody of the child, and an Amber Alert was issued.

Alexander was initially driving a pickup truck, but at some point switched over to a large UHaul truck.

At about 8 p.m., a Brunswick police officer spotted the UHaul Alexander was driving and tried to pull him over, but he refused to stop. He was pursued by multiple agencies along Interstate 71, with stop sticks thrown in his path. Ultimately, his vehicle was disabled, forcing him to exit the interstate in Medina Township, WJW reported.

Alexander came to a stop in a parking lot, and officers tried negotiate with him as he spoke with dispatchers from several jurisdictions by telephone.

Police said Alexander was armed, and eventually he was shot dead by police, who did not say how long negotiations lasted, what led to the shooting, or whether Alexander fired any weapon he may have had.

No officers were hurt in the shooting, WEWS said.

The shooting took place in an Arby’s parking lot, and the Columbus Dispatch reported that the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations will investigate the shooting.

Medina Township is about two hours from Empire, where the kidnapping took place.
