A Columbia, Ohio, police officer opened up a burning truck door and dragged its driver to safety this week, suffering minor burns herself but saving the man’s life.
The Columbus Division of Police released body camera video of the dramatic rescue, along with the driver’s desperate 911 call for help, WSYX reported.
The driver, who identified himself as Randy, called 911 around 4:30 a.m., telling a dispatcher he was “coming up on (Interstate) 270” and could not slow the truck down. Moments later, he slammed into a bridge pillar and cried out for help as his truck burst into flames.
“It’s getting really hot in here. I can’t get out,” he called out. “My ankle’s broke I can’t get out of my truck; get me out of here.”
“Tell my wife I love her. Please, tell my wife I love her.”
Officers arrived on scene seconds later, and Officer Gloria West took action.
“I’m not gonna leave him in there,” she says as she rushes to the burning vehicle and opens the door. “Randy, come this way. Take my hand.”
Minutes after they got Randy out of the truck, it exploded.
“He was smoking. This man was on fire,” said Fraternal Order of Police Capital Lodge #9 President Brian Steel. “He 100 percent would not have lived had they not taken the action they took.”
Randy had extensive burns and is now in intensive care in stable condition. West was treated for minor burns.
