An Indiana mother who admitted she sometimes forgot to feed her infant son after he died of starvation was sentenced Friday to 65 years in prison.

Caylin Monroe was found guilty in October in the death of 3-month-old Silas Scott in February 2022, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.

Monroe and the baby’s father, Jakob Scott, were arrested in April 2022 and charged with murder and neglect of a dependent causing death, as CrimeOnline reported. Both Scott and Monroe told investigators that they would “forget” to feed to boy if he didn’t cry.

An autopsy found that Silas’s stomach was empty when he died. The parents couldn’t recall the last time he ate.

Silas’s death followed a state investigation into a similar issue with another of Monroe’s children.

In court on Friday, Circuit Court Judge Greg Granger cited “a lack of remorse” as an aggravating factor in Monroe’s sentence.

According to court records, Monroe rejected plea deals offered by prosecutor’s prior to her trial.

Monroe has 30 days to file an appeal if she wants to appeal. Her public defenders withdrew from the case, and the court appointed a new one.

Jakob Scott is due in court on December 2, Law&Crime said.
