An Amber Alert was issued shortly after midnight Sunday morning after a man allegedly abducted a 12-year-old girl he met online and let police on a chase on Interstate 15.

The Bountiful Police Department said family members of the girl confronted the man before he took off with her his Chevrolet Camaro.

About eight hours later, officers located the distinctive muscle car still in the same area where the abduction took place. The driver began driving erratically, and police launched a pursuit, following the vehicle onto the highway at a high rate of speed. The suspect switched to Interstate 215, where he rear-ended a Woods Cross police vehicle. Both vehicles were disabled, and police took the suspect into custody.

The girl was not physically injured in the crash, but was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, as was the Woods Cross police officer.

The suspect was taken into custody, and police are working to positively identify him.

Officers also found a handgun in the driver’s floorboard of the car. The Amber Alert was canceled after the girl was recovered.
