A 13-year-old Indiana boy has been charged with murder after initially reporting the death of another boy as a suicide.
Shortly after midnight on November 10, Greenwood police responded to a call about a possible suicide attempt. Officers arrived to find 13-year-old James Davis suffering from a gunshot wound and in critical condition.
He was transported to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police investigators determined that six boys were present at the scene of the shooting, including Davis and his alleged assailant.
The parents of one of the boys were home at the time but asleep in another part of the house. Reports did not clarify whose parents they were or whether they owned the gun that killed Davis.
WXIN reports that the parents are not currently facing criminal charges.
Proceedings have begun in the Johnson County Juvenile Court, where the prosecutor’s office filed petitions for murder and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
If committed by an adult, both charges are felonies, according to JCPO.
