A Texas couple has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of their 3-year-old daughter on Thursday.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the home in rural Donna, Texas, late Thursday afternoon. The toddler was taken to Edinburg Children’s Hospital but pronounced dead about an hour later.
The sheriff’s office said the little girl “suffered extensive injuries, including bruises, lacerations, burns, and bite marks, indicating prolonged abuse.” The girl’s mother, 25-year-old Wendy Rivera admitted knowing about the injuries and was charged with failure to report a felony.
Police launched a search for the girl’s father, 23-year-old Jose Manuel Uresti and secured a warrant for his arrest on capital murder charges after an autopsy revealed the girl died from blunt force trauma injuries.
They also added a charge of injury to a minor to Rivera, who was being held on a $2.5 million bond.
On Saturday, the sheriff’s office announced that US Marshals had arrested Uresti on the Anzalduas International Bridge in McAllen.
