A Pennsylvania mother and her boyfriend face multiple counts of child abuse after she brought her two toddlers to the hospital with clear signs of abuse.
The children, 2 and 3, were hospitalized at UPMC Children’s Hospital on November 5, WPXI reported. A criminal complaint said that the 2-year-old had fractures in his leg, hand, arm, shoulder, and rib along with multiple cuts and bruises and brain cell death. He also tested positive for cocaine.
The 3-year-old had fractures to both collarbones and a rib and an injury to his neck.
Doctors said healing for the injuries ranged from a week to three months and that the injuries could not have been caused accidentally.
According to the complaint, Haley Province told police that she had her boyfriend, Bobby Bender, had recently moved in together in Rankin. She said she had left the children in Bender’s care while she went to the store, and when she returned, the younger boy would not stand up. The next day, she said, he would not stay standing or put weight on his right leg and cried when she had him stand.
Province said she’d never seen Bender hit the children, but, she said, she saw bruising after they’d been left alone with him.
Bender told police he watched the children on Fridays while Province went to the doctor. Both said they used to do cocaine but had been clean recently.
A search warrant, however, turned up cocaine residue, the complaint said, and evidence suggested the couple was selling cocaine.
Both adults were charged with six counts of aggravated assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of children, and on count of criminal conspiracy.
WPXI did not provide information about the current conditions or whereabouts of the children.
