A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition in Harris County, Texas.
Fox 26 reports that the child was taken to the hospital on Tuesday. The hospital notified the authorities regarding a report of an injury to a child.
The child’s injuries related to abuse were severe enough that she was transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital and classified as being in serious condition.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated that an investigation is underway by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit due to the life-threatening nature of the child’s injuries.
Tameria Barnett, 30, was allegedly caring for the child at the time she sustained the injuries. Gonzalez mentioned that Barnett is a friend of the child’s mother.
Barnett had been caring for the victim since September 2024, when the child’s mother was incarcerated, according to ABC 13.
Gonzalez posted on social media that the child was beaten, saying, “My heart breaks for this precious little girl. She allegedly was beaten daily for months.”
A warrant was issued for Barnett, who has been arrested and charged with injury to a child. She was taken to Harris County Jail on Thursday.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that there has also been no contact with the child’s father since September.
