Search Continues for Grandmom Who Possibly Fell in 30-Foot Sinkhole

The search continues for a Pennsylvania woman who possibly fell into a sinkhole on Monday.

Trooper Cliff Greenfield said on Wednesday that search efforts were halted after mine roofing collapsed. Specialized cameras and other equipment are still being used to search for Elizabeth Pollard, 64, who was last seen in Union Township, according to WTAE.

Pollard was reportedly looking for her cat when she vanished. Her 5-year-old granddaughter was found in a car 15 to 20 feet from where she disappeared.

“The water being pushed through the mine to help break down the materials so that we can suck it out is causing distress on the integrity, and that distress is actually becoming dangerous for a potential other mine subsidence to take place,” Trooper Steve Limani said, per WTAE.

While listening devices did not detect any sound, cameras reportedly caught a glimpse of a shoe.

“It’s a modern shoe — not something you’d find in a coal mine in Marguerite in 1940,” Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Chief John Bacha said, according to NBC News.
