Police in Madison, Wisconsin, are investigating a shooting at a Christian school on Monday, with reports indicating multiple fatalities.
According to the Madison Police Department, officers responded to reports of an active shooter at the Abundant Life Christian School and identified a juvenile suspect believed to be involved in the incident. The suspect was discovered dead inside the building.
Initially, police reported that five people died and five were injured in Monday’s shooting. Those claims were made in error, and emerging reports indicated that three people died and seven were injured. The suspect is among the deceased.
WISN reports that law enforcement from the county and state quickly arrived at the scene, where officers initiated life-saving measures for the injured before first responders rushed them to hospitals.
The victims’ and suspect identities have not been released, as authorities are still notifying family members. Madison Police Chief Shon F. Barnes said the juvenile suspect was a student at the school, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Officials have opened a unification center for parents and guardians looking for information about their students. Madison schools were placed on lockdown as a safety measure, but police indicated there are no threats to other MMSD schools.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation. More information will be released as it is available,” police said in a statement.
