New York police have arrested a mother who abandoned her newborn baby girl outside a Bronx home Sunday morning.
Delfina Galvez has been charged with reckless endangerment and abandonment of a child, WABC reported. She is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
Police said Galvez lives near where she left the infant.
The baby was discovered wrapped in blankets in a tote bag, according to WCBS.
Surveillance video showed the woman walking in the neighborhood, carrying a green tote. She was seen setting the back down several times before walking out of the video frame. When she returns into the frame, she no longer has the bag.
A neighbor called Mamadou Hafiz Jallow, who lives in the home, and reported hearing a baby cry. Jallow, an imam, was at his mosque down the street, but he left and returned home, finding the baby.
“When I opened the blanket, I see a little baby, blinking their eyes and shaking their fingers. Very cold,” he said.
He brought the child inside and called 911. The little girl was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
New York has a safe haven law that allows newborns to be dropped off at certain locations without criminal charges.
