Mother, Daughter Wounded When Shooting Targets Use Them as Human Shields

A group of people opened fire on another group of people outside a New York City convenience store Monday afternoon, and one of the intended targets grabbed a 40-year-old mother and spun her around as a shield from the gunfire.

Police said the woman and her 12-year-old daughter, who was also shot, were standing at the counter inside the Bronx store when the shooting started outside just before 5 p.m., WABC reported. The targets ran into the store, and one of the grabbed the mother and turned her around.

The woman was shot in the stomach, and her daughter was shot in the leg. Police said they, along with four men who were shot, are all expected to survive. Investigators don’t yet know if any of the four men, aged 18 to 21, were among the intended targets.

The two suspects, both wearing masks, fled the scene.

“We had a brazen and heartless attack by two shooters who opened fire in the middle of the street and into a crowded convenience store, striking six people,” NYPD Interim Chief Of Department John Chell said.
