A Chattanooga man allegedly shot someone and then called 911 to report the crime.
Isaiah Zachary Berry, 22, called 911 to report that he had shot a man. Police identified the victim as Alexander Newton, 55.
Chattanooga police said the shooting occurred Thursday at an abandoned multi-unit complex near the west side of Missionary Ridge, in the 2600 block of Glenwood Parkway, during the early morning hours, according to Fox Chattanooga.
When police arrived at the complex, they found Newton lying on the floor in the doorway of a rear bedroom, suffering from life-threatening injuries. Newton was later pronounced dead at the scene.
News Channel 9 reported that Berry was asleep in the abandoned building when Newton “came in yelling and pulled a blanket away from him,” according to the affidavit. Newton’s actions startled Berry, prompting him to fire his gun several times toward the victim.
“The preliminary investigation reveals the suspect and victim were in an abandoned apartment when the suspect shot the victim multiple times. Evidence at the scene appears to show that the suspect stood over the victim and fired at least one round at him.”
Berry has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
