A mother has been arrested after she admitted doing drugs and getting in to a motel tub with her infant daughter then falling asleep while the baby drowned.

Emergency responders were called to Motel 6 in Louisville, Kentucky, at about 4:40 a.m. on January 1, WLKY reported.

Amber Winstead, 36, told officers she had been doing drugs “sporadically” throughout the day and got into the tub with the 3-month-old baby. Hours later, another person woke her up, but the baby had drowned.

The baby’s sister reportedly told police that her mother was holding the little girl in the tub when she fell asleep. Winstead’s other children were placed with the baby’s grandmother.

Winstead was arrested on Wednesday and is due in court on Thursday, WAVE said.
