Alabama Man Arrested 2 1/2 Months After Hitting, Killing 10-Year-Old Girl Riding Scooter

An Alabama man was arrested this week on a manslaughter charge in the death of a 10-year-old girl he struck with his vehicle while she was riding her scooter.

Ember Poe died eight days after the November 5, 2024, incident at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, AL.com reported.

John David Winton, 45, was arrested on Wednesday and booked into the Shelby County Jail.

According to court records, Winton was arrested three days after the fatal crash and charged with drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on bond and returned to work as a maintenance man at the apartment complex where the Poe family lived.

The little girl’s mother, Kelly Lane, addressed the issue on her social media pages this week, saying his vehicle still had damage from hitting her daughter, and the apartment management told her she could move if she was uncomfortable.

She told AL.com that she learned Winton was fired and he was arrested on Wednesday.
