Texas Parents Leave Children Alone, Cold and Hungry, for Hours

A pair of Texas parents were arrested Tuesday after police say they left their three young children — one of them just a month old — home alone for hours with no food and little heat.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office didn’t say why they responded to the home of Camila Alvarado, 29, and Julio Cesar Briseno, 30, at around 6 p.m., but the hungry and cold children — 9, 6, and 4 weeks — told them they’d been alone since the morning, Valley Central reported.

The only source of heat in the house was a small space heater in the bedroom where the children were located.

Police were unsuccessful at reaching the parents and eventually called Child Protective Services to take the kids for their own safety.

Alvarado and Briseno finally came home at about 9:15 p.m. and appeared drunk, deputies said. They were uncooperative.

Both were charged with three counts of abandoning and endangering a child, and Alvarado got an additional charge of resisting arrest. Biriseno also got more charges — violating an active protective order and failure to identify.

The children will remain in state custody until the case concludes.
