An Indiana man has been charged with attempted murder and feticide after her shot his estranged wife in the back, ending her pregnancy.
Jeremy McBride, 36, reportedly told police he’d bought a gun a few days earlier and intended to kill Kayla Netherland, her baby, and himself, WXIN reported.
McBride and Netherland were estranged, police said, and he was upset because “He and his wife hadn’t gotten divorced, yet she had gotten pregnant” with a child that wasn’t his.
McBride told detectives that he had hoped he and Netherland, who was five months pregnant, would get back together. On Sunday, he said, the two had been “hanging out” and gone shopping at Goodwill, Law&Crime reported. According to the affidavit, they were talking when McBride opened fire, telling detectives it “made sense in the moment.”
He shot her five times in the back, and she never saw it coming, he said.
A friend of Netherland’s arrived at the home moments after the shooting and saw McBride standing over her. Police wrote in the report that McBride looked at the friend and then walked out the front door without saying a word. The friend called 911, reporting that she thought McBride had killed Netherland.
Indianapolis Police said that license plate readers tracked his vehicle and a traffic stop was initiated. McBride was taken into custody without incident, and a firearm was found in his vehicle.
Netherland has undergone multiple surgeries since the shooting and is expected to survive. Doctors were unable to save her baby, however.
